Frequently asked questions

Answers about data, score, location and the limits of ChargeBreak.

Basics

What is ChargeBreak?

ChargeBreak helps you quickly find a fitting break place on a trip: a bakery, café, playground, green space or supermarket within walking distance of a suitable charging point. Suggestions follow your vehicle, your companions and your interests.

Is ChargeBreak a charging app or a navigation system?

No. There are good apps for managing charge points, paying tariffs or planning routes. ChargeBreak answers a different question: Where do I take a good break here? The charge point is the prerequisite, not the destination.

Can ChargeBreak plan my route?

Not yet. The search works around a place: your location or a place you type in, for example a point on your route. Reachability is currently measured by straight-line distance to the starting point, not by the detour on a route.

Which countries does ChargeBreak cover?

Europe-wide, as far as Open Charge Map and OpenStreetMap have data. Data density varies by region – in sparsely mapped areas there are fewer matches and confidence is correspondingly lower.

Which languages are available?

The website and the app are available in German and English. Use the language switch at the top right to change.

Data and score

Does ChargeBreak show whether a charger is free?

No. Neither Open Charge Map nor OpenStreetMap provides reliable live occupancy. We therefore show “Status unknown – no live data”. A live indicator would only be allowed with a source and a timestamp.

Where does the data come from?

Charge points: Open Charge Map and OpenStreetMap. Surroundings (bakery, café, playground …): OpenStreetMap. Walking routes: OSRM on OpenStreetMap data. Place search: Nominatim. More on Data sources & transparency.

What do Pause-Score and confidence mean?

The Pause-Score (0–100) says how well a place fits your input. Confidence (0–1) says how complete and current the underlying data is. Both are shown separately. Details: The Pause-Score.

Why is a café not shown as dog-friendly?

Because the map says nothing about it. Only what OpenStreetMap explicitly records counts as dog-friendly (dog=yes, leashed …). If the tag is missing, the property stays “unknown” and earns no points. You can add the tag in OpenStreetMap.

What does “walking route estimated” mean?

Normally the walking time is computed on the path network. If the routing service is unreachable we estimate from the straight line (factor 1.3 at 4.5 km/h). We mark this as “estimated” right where it appears, and confidence drops.

I found wrong data. What can I do?

The data comes from OpenStreetMap and Open Charge Map, so correcting it there is most effective. Note that charging data is cached for up to 10 minutes and surroundings data for up to 24 hours. For errors on this website, write to us via the contact page.

Privacy and access

Do I need an account?

No. Your browser remembers your settings locally. ChargeBreak creates no user profiles and sets no tracking cookies.

Is my location stored?

Your browser asks before sharing your location. We do not store it in a database or an account. For technical reasons it can appear in the hosting provider’s server logs because the search sends it as a parameter. Details in the privacy policy.

Is the website accessible?

We work towards WCAG 2.2 AA: keyboard operation, visible focus, sufficient contrast, no motion without reason. See the accessibility statement for the current status and known gaps.
